What is Equine Thermography?

A thermal inspection is a non-contact non-invasive technique that provides a pictorial representation of the surface temperature of the horse’s body. Sensors within the camera convert infrared radiation (heat) emitted from the surface of the skin into electrical impulses that are shown on the image as areas of color.

White represents the hottest temperature and is found on areas where there is major blood flow including parts of the face and the coronary bands.  The colors change as you go from hottest (white) down through red, yellow, green to blue and finally black which represents the coldest areas. A blue streak indicating a lack of temperature can indicate pinching or pressure for example on a nerve , while a white area can indicate soft tissue, muscular, or tendon damage, or an area of increased blood flow that is associated with injury. In the case of saddle fitting, areas of white show rubbing.

The procedure only takes a few minutes, during which time the Thermographer examines the horse. The horse is not touched during the inspection, making it ideal for young or nervous horses. The results of the inspection are instant, and the thermal images are left with the owner so that a full diagnosis can be made by a veterinarian.

Thermography has been used since the mid 1990's and accepted by veterinary practices as an  aid to assist diagnosis. A Thermography  inspection is easily done at home where the horse is kept.

Thermography by Dr. Mike is an evaluation of the horse for areas that may need further attention by a licensed veterinarian or farrier or Equine bodyworkwer.  Dr. Mike does not provide any diagnosis by thermography, only guidance on areas that are likely causing problems and need further attention.

Dr. Mike has been studying and using thermography since 2016 and has completed coursework on Equine Thermography.
